Kids can help from beginning to end for making this simple, yummy hummus.
Overview
Makes: 2 adult or 4 toddler portions
Difficulty: easy
Ingredients:
- 1 can of chickpeas, drained and rinsed
- Juice of 1/2 lemon or 2 tbsp of bottled pure lemon juice
- Olive oil
- 2 – 3 cloves of garlic, crushed
- 1 rounded tsp of cumin (optional)
- 1 carrot, grated
- A pinch of salt and pepper
- 4 small whole-wheat pita breads
- dash of paprika and fresh basil (optional, for topping)
Method:
To make your hummus, start by rinsing the canned chickpeas. Next, mash up all your ingredients (except the raisins), using either a potato masher or blender. Add a little water if necessary. Optionally, top with a bit of paprika and fresh basil for extra flavor. Now, either serve with sliced pita, or, open up the pita pockets, put two teaspoons of hummus in each and add a pinch of salt and pepper to season.
Neat cheats
If you don’t have time to make your own hummus, you can buy it ready-made in most stores.
Make it together!
Children will enjoy being part of the whole process of mashing, grating, and spooning the mixture into the pita pockets. An example toddler portion for this would be 2 – 3 tbsp of hummus and 1/2 – 1 mini pitas or 1/4 – 1/2 pita breads.
Messy fun! Sheena x
